While the winter storm that blew through southern Saskatchewan over the weekend gave many people an excuse to stay home and put their feet up, police weren’t so fortunate.
Between Friday and Sunday, the RCMP in Saskatchewan received 139 weather-related calls for service, largely related to collisions and vehicles stuck in snowbanks. The police service put it mildly in a statement, saying the late-season storm created “less-than-ideal driving conditions.”
But despite the chaos the winter storm caused on many roads and highways, the RCMP noted that no fatal collisions were reported over the weekend.
Of the 139 calls, 49 of them were for the areas around Regina, the RCMP said.
The national police service said everyone’s eager for warmer weather, but encouraged residents not to pack away their winter driving skills quite yet.
“If you are planning to travel, please consult with the weather forecast and the Highway Hotline,” the RCMP said in a statement. “If road conditions look like they are or may become poor, consider delaying travel if possible.”
It’s also important to keep vehicles stocked with emergency supplies whenever hitting the road in winter conditions, the RCMP added.
