Saskatoon homeowners will have to make room for another cart on their driveways with the rollout of the city’s green bin program.
On Monday, city crews will begin delivering the rollout green carts and the smaller kitchen pails to homes across the city.
The neighbourhood delivery schedule can be found on the city’s website, with roughly 12,000 bins expected to be delivered each week before the first collection begins in May.
Every household that has rollout garbage and recycling carts will receive a green cart and kitchen pail starter kit. Previous green cart subscribers will continue using their existing cart but will receive the smaller pail for food waste.
The program is mandatory and the monthly fee will be added to city utility bills. The average cost will be $6.73 per household, according the city.
The program is revenue-neutral and the fee being charged will cover costs of composting, collection, maintaining carts and educational materials.
The city estimates 20,000 tonnes or 3,300 garbage trucks of organic material will be diverted from the landfill over a given year.
