Do you have an old electronic device full of personal data that you never use anymore?
The Saskatoon Police Service is holding a free event next Thursday for Fraud Prevention Month, offering residents the chance to have their personal data destroyed as the old electronics are recycled, helping to prevent the possibility of fraud or identity theft.
The “data destruction and electronics recycling event” comes from a partnership between the police service’s Economic Crime Section and the Electronic Recycling Association.
The association will collect and securely destroy any unwanted devices, police said, including desktop computers, laptops, handheld devices, printers, gaming consoles, stereo equipment, servers, software and routers. Appliances are not accepted, the police service noted.
Officers with the Economic Crime Section will also be on hand to answer questions about data safety and fraud prevention.
The event is set for next Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the gymnasium inside the Saskatoon Police Service headquarters.
