A handful of seniors with special needs in Preeceville won’t have to uproot from their specialized group home.
Minister of Social Services Gene Makowsky confirmed Wednesday the group home that was slated for closure at the end of the month will stay open after meetings this week with between ministry staff and the owners, nonprofit Mackenzie Society Ventures Inc.
“As a result of those conversations, the group home in Preeceville will re-open,” Makowsky said.
“(I’m) glad to hear that the (residents) will continue to live in the home that they have in some cases for quite a long time. Our focus is always the clients in the group homes.”
The pending closure of the group home was brought to light earlier in the week by CUPE 3364 which was concerned about what would happen to the home’s three residents.
Makowsky said staff from the ministry where able to work through communication issues and on-going staffing concerns with the owners of the group home, but didn’t give details on how they were able to reverse the decision. According to the union, the reason for the closure was the fact the home has been operating without a supervisor for the past two years.
“That was worked through with work done by the south service area of Community Living Service Delivery (CLSD) within the ministry. They worked directly with the board to work on those issues and as a result that home is staying open.”
Makowsky clarified the group home has always remained fully funded by the ministry.
Preeceville is located just over three hours east of Saskatoon and just over three hours northeast of Regina.
