The Saskatoon Wellness Centre is celebrating a large and practical donation from a local Knights of Columbus organization.
Two deep freezers and boxes of clothing — including winter jackets — were given to the Wellness Centre by the Saskatoon Knights of Columbus 8215 on Wednesday.
According to a release from the Wellness Centre, the freezers were “desperately needed” because the shelter did not previously have any large storage areas for frozen food.
Meals for the 106 relatives staying at the centre are prepared daily at the White Buffalo Youth Lodge and shuttled to the Wellness Centre three times each day.
The Wellness Centre thanked the organization in its release.
“Homelessness is a community problem and it’s great to see the community come together as we look to help those in need,” said Mark Arcand, chief of the Saskatoon Tribal Council, which runs the Wellness Centre.
He said the freezers will be used now and be part of the second phase of the Wellness Centre, which includes the creation of a commercial kitchen at the Fairmont Drive location.
