Two members of each of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and University of Regina Cougars women’s basketball programs earned Canada West awards Wednesday.
Huskies guard Carly Ahlstrom was named the conference’s player of the year, while Saskatchewan guard Logan Reider was selected the conference’s top rookie.
Regina’s Dave Taylor was named the coach of the year for the second time in his career, and Cougars guard Madeleine Tell earned the conference’s Courage Overcoming Adversity Award.
All four will move to be considered for U Sports awards.
Ahlstrom, a product of Calgary who’s in her fourth season with the Huskies, averaged 20.4 points and eight rebounds per game to help the Huskies go 17-3 in the Canada West regular season.
Reider, who hails from Saskatoon, averaged 11.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game for Saskatchewan.
Taylor, who’s in his 17th season as the Cougars’ bench boss, led his team to a 17-3 record in the 2022-23 regular season and a 27-5 overall mark. He has a 252-78 record in his career and is the winningest coach in program history.
Tell, a Regina product who’s in her fourth season of eligibility, has dealt with significant adversity in her career.
In a media release, Canada West said Tell’s father was diagnosed with cancer in March of 2021; he died less than a year later. During that time, Tell was recovering from an ACL surgery and a torn labrum, but she kept playing.
In December of 2022, she again tore an ACL. She came back from that injury in the new year sporting a knee brace, but then dislocated a shoulder after just four games and didn’t play the rest of the season.
