Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Environment is reminding anglers to reel in their ice fishing shelters in the coming weeks.
The deadlines to remove shelters south of Highway 16 is March 15, and March 31 is the deadline for shelters north of that highway.
The ministry said shacks should be taken off the ice before it gets unsafe.
“Spring weather can be unpredictable, leading to unsafe ice conditions, sometimes earlier than expected,” the ministry said in a release. “Owners must remove all structures and litter from the ice.
“Shelters may not be left on the shore and must be transported away. Abandoned shelters pose an unnecessary risk to everyone who enjoys our lakes in the summer. Pieces of shelter can cause injuries and litter our shores.”
The ministry urged people to take care when on the ice, where slush, cracks and pressure ridges indicate unsafe conditions. The thickness and strength of the ice also can be different from area to area.
