Southeast weightlifter basking in gold medal glory

Competitive weightlifter Alix Rae is back home in Carlyle now, but just a few days ago she was competing at the Saskatchewan Winter Games in Regina.

The 13-year-old won the first gold medal for team Southeast in the 45-kilogram weight class.

“It’s really exciting,” Rae said. “It’s just really important because it shows that I’m good at what I do.”

She said technique is very important in her sport.

“They judge on all of your lifts and how good they look because you can’t push out your arms at the top of a lift and stuff like that,” she said. “There’s judges and then it’s scored on if it’s a lift or a no lift, and then your weight too.”

Rae said she had a blast at the games.

“It was really fun, it was a good experience. There was lots of activities to do when you weren’t competing,” she said, adding that she watched some of the table tennis.

Rae didn’t hesitate when asked where she will keep her gold medal.

“Hang it up in my room, probably,” she said.

Team Southeast is now up to 13 medals at the games, which wrap up on Saturday.
