Things are poised to change quite a bit for Saskatchewan’s two biggest newspapers.
Postmedia is shutting the doors of its office in Saskatoon and putting the building up for sale. The company also is looking to sublease its Regina property.
That means all staff members will be working remotely on a permanent basis.
Postmedia also will shut down the printing facility in Saskatoon.
A few years ago, the company stopped printing the Leader-Post in Regina and moved printing to Saskatoon. Now, Glacier Media is going to print the StarPhoenix and the Leader-Post in Estevan.
Some people will lose their jobs in the printing facility, but Postmedia couldn’t say how many.
The company also is moving a dozen of its Alberta community newspapers to digital-only formats, but didn’t say which newspapers would make the switch.
The moves were announced Wednesday in an internal memo to staff that was obtained by The Canadian Press. It describes the measures as part of a transformation plan geared toward managing costs.
The memo says the plan will result in an unspecified number of roles being eliminated across Postmedia over the coming month as it works through vacancies and layoffs.
