Saskatoon police have arrested a man they believe was behind a recent string of scams in the city.
On Tuesday, police issued a warning about the scammer and said he may have stolen as much as $100,000 pretending to be a relative of his victims.
Police said the family emergency scam involves someone contacting the victim by phone, pretending to be a relative in trouble, and asking for money to cover an emergency expense like bail or hospital bills.
In a release Wednesday, police said their Economic Crime Section had arrested a 25-year-old man in the 400 block of Nelson Road.
“Investigators believe he is responsible for numerous frauds, dating back to December 21, 2022,” the police release said.
The man was charged with seven counts of fraud over $5,000, but police said more charges could be laid as the investigation continues.
Anyone who may have been a victim of fraud is urged to call police at 306-975-8300.
