A possible location for the public to scatter the ashes of loved ones has been identified in Saskatoon.
According to a report to be presented to the city’s Planning and Development Committee on Wednesday, an area in Meewasin Park in the River Heights area has been identified.
The location, according to the report, is near public washrooms and other park amenities.
In April 2021, Coun. Randy Donauer presented a motion to councillors about requests from the Saskatoon Hindu Society to release cremated remains into the river.
Since then, both the Hindu and Sikh societies of Saskatchewan have asked for a city policy associated with scattering ashes and the possibility of a dedicated location to perform ceremonies.
According to the report, it could be included as a capital project option in future budget deliberations, but city council approval and the approval of the Meewasin Board of Directors is necessary.
Permission may also be needed from the provincial government, Transport Canada, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada to build any structure next to the river, which is a federally regulated waterway.
Next steps in the project include additional consultation with stakeholders and a design phase in 2024 that could cost around $55,000. Phase 2 would include construction of a potential ceremonial area, and another structure on or next to the river in 2025 at a cost of $246,000.
