Saskatoon will be looking a lot more orange this weekend as the province’s NDP members attend their annual convention.
The agenda for the weekend includes a full slate of talks, workshops and panels. There are also a number of speakers, including: Lori Johb, president of the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour; Rachel Notley, leader of the Alberta NDP; and, Wab Kinew, leader of the Manitoba NDP.
There will be video addresses from former Saskatchewan premier Roy Romanow and federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh.
During the weekend, the group will also vote on resolutions for things to incorporate into the party’s platform.
The resolutions span a wide range of topics, from education to health care to the inner workings of the party itself.
Some of the resolutions include reducing the number of constituencies to 57 from 61 if the NDP forms government. The resolutions cite other provinces which have more people but fewer constituencies.
Ending public funding for private education and tying public funding for education to upholding of the Saskatchewan Human Rights Code are included in the resolutions a few times.
Things like pressuring the governing Saskatchewan Party to fund safe injection sites is one of the proposed resolutions, as well as subsidizing housing for seniors and low-income people, raising the minimum wage, and legislating 10 paid sick days a year for workers.
Other resolutions include committing to establish a high-speed rail system within the province, supporting the implementation of the UN declaration on the rights of Indigenous peoples, and vowing that the next NDP government will recognize all living Indigenous languages traditionally spoken in Saskatchewan as official languages alongside English and French.
The resolutions are submitted by constituency and party groups and will be voted on at the convention.
