The Regina Thunder ran its Prairie Football Conference regular-season winning streak to 19 games Sunday with a 39-14 victory over the host Calgary Colts.
Regina hasn’t lost a PFC regular-season game since Sept. 7, 2019, when it fell 28-21 to the Saskatoon Hilltops.
The Thunder won its final four games of the 2019 campaign, won all eight of its regular-season games in 2021 and improved to 7-0-0 with Sunday’s win. The 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID-19.
The victory Sunday also helped the Thunder clinch first place in the PFC for a second straight season.
In Edmonton on Sunday, the Hilltops improved to 4-3-0 with a 64-7 victory over the host Wildcats. Saskatoon is two points back of the Edmonton Huskies (5-2-0) for second place in the conference.
In Calgary, the Thunder led 9-8 at halftime before erupting for 30 points in the second half.
Isaac Foord (12- and 18-yard receptions), Zak Woidyla (two-yard catch) and Rylan Sokul (37-yard pass) had touchdowns for Regina, which got two field goals, three singles and four converts from Eric Maximuik. Regina also recorded a safety.
Thunder quarterback Carter Shewchuk went 14-for-31 passing for 211 yards with three TDs and Carter Moberg was 3-for-3 for 18 yards with one score. Sokul caught seven passes for 120 yards for Regina.
In Edmonton, the Hilltops rolled up 524 yards of net offence and rolled over the Wildcats (0-7-0).
Boston Davidsen rushed 12 times for 157 yards with two- and 32-yard touchdown runs for the Hilltops, who got a one-yard TD run from Carter McLean and 34-yard scoring run from Corbin Ebben.
Dillan Heintz (18- and 21-yard catches), Noah Flaman (25-yard reception) and Charles Sawi (96-yard kickoff return) had the other TDs for Saskatoon, which got two field goals and eight converts from Teijan Abel-Douglas and two singles from Matt Wist.
Trey Reider was 16-for-20 passing for 207 yards with three TDs for the Hilltops.
The league’s six teams have a bye next weekend. On Oct. 16, Regina is to entertain the Huskies and Saskatoon is to play host to Calgary.
