The Saskatchewan Roughriders have cut ties with defensive tackle Garrett Marino.
The CFL’s Roughriders announced they had released Marino on Tuesday, a day before they’re to return to the field for practice ahead of Saturday’s Banjo Bowl in Winnipeg.
The 28-year-old Marino has been under a microscope for most of the season after his actions in a July 8 game against the Ottawa Redblacks. Late in the game, Marino hit Redblacks quarterback Jeremiah Masoli low, which ultimately injured the pivot.
Marino was ejected for his actions and celebrated on his way to Saskatchewan’s locker room.
He was suspended for four games by the CFL for the incident — two for the hit on Masoli, one for a hit on a Redblack offensive lineman, and one for what the CFL said were comments about Masoli’s heritage.
It was the longest suspension for on-field behaviour in the league’s history.
In his first game back, Marino was fined for unnecessary roughness against B.C. Lions offensive lineman Peter Godber on Aug. 19.
Marino was the target of more criticism after a hit on Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros in Sunday’s Labour Day Classic. Marino wasn’t penalized on the play and Collaros stayed in the game, which Winnipeg won 20-18.
Marino has appeared in 15 career games for the Riders, recording 22 tackles and five sacks.
