One year later, SGI is calling the hailstorm that hit Regina and southern Saskatchewan on Aug. 31, 2021 the costliest event ever for the insurance company.
In a statement to 980 CJME on Wednesday, an SGI spokesperson said the storm was “the biggest catastrophic event in SGI’s history,” with claims totalling around $105 million.
The statement said the storm cost the Auto Fund an estimated $65 million, with another $40 million in costs to SGI Canada.
The company had 3,066 property claims reported from that day, with a total of more than $18 million paid. Those claims include 470 that have been reported in 2022, the spokesperson said, “and they continue to roll in each day.”
There also were a record-breaking 12,817 vehicle damage claims, with customers getting put into what SGI called a “holding schedule” until appraisal blitzes could be held to assess all of the vehicles.
The storm pounded the southern half of the province, including Regina. The northwest end of the city in particular was hammered, with structures suffering damage to windows, roofs and siding, trees and plants losing leaves and branches, and cars having their windows broken and bodies dimpled by hailstones.
