The sun was shining Tuesday as the Saskatoon Ex officially got underway.
This is the chance to enjoy the shows, rides and of course the food along the midway during the five-day event.
There was a lot of excitement around the food on the first day and there was plenty to indulge in, Prairieland Park marketing manager Kristy Rempel said, noting there will be some different items.
“Every year we do our very best to bring to Saskatoon things that you aren’t going to see anywhere else,” Rempel said.
And one of those things you likely will not see on a restaurant menu is mac n’ cheese ice cream.
Kathie Malidom works at the stand and says it isn’t for everybody, but it’s worth trying.
“In Calgary we had someone throw up and in Edmonton we had someone come back like seven times to grab more cups,” Malidom said.
She said so far in Saskatchewan, people are enjoying it.
Talking with people in the crowd, there was a mixed reaction.
Some weren’t afraid of trying it and said it tasted like Tiger Tiger ice cream without the licorice. Others wouldn’t get near it, saying they didn’t even like Kraft Dinner to begin with.
If you’re looking for something sweet and deep fried, another booth had all of your favorite treats in some deep-fried goodness.
It included deep-fried Kit Kat fries, Oreos, cheesecake and Mars bars.
But from poutine to corndogs and elephant ears to blooming onions, all of the midway classics and favourites were available so fairgoers likely won’t be leaving hungry.
Shows and concerts will be available every day, with each night ending with fireworks at 11 p.m.
