Cold case: Wanted man pushes freezer into Nipawin RCMP officer

An RCMP officer is fine after being hit by a freezer that was recently pushed into him by a fleeing suspect.

Officers in Nipawin were called to a store on the 100 block of First Avenue West around 3 p.m. on July 18, after someone complained of a suspicious person outside.

When police got there, they found the man outside the store and noted he had an outstanding arrest warrant.

The suspect ran from officers, going inside the business and pushing large items into the aisle to stop the chase.

One of those items was a freezer, said the RCMP, but the officer who was hit did not need medical treatment.

Shortly afterwards, police arrested the man and seized 118 grams of methamphetamine and 24 grams of cocaine.

A 42-year-man from Arborfield is facing multiple charges, including resisting arrest, mischief under $5,000, assaulting a police officer, possessing a weapon for dangerous purpose, possession of break-in instruments, failure to comply with a release order, possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

He was also arrested on outstanding warrants from Carrot River RCMP.

He’s to make his next appearance in Carrot River Provincial Court on Sept. 8.
