Hundreds of Saskatchewan drivers are facing stiff penalties after getting behind the wheel while impaired.
According to SGI, a total of 482 people were criminally charged or had their licence suspended in June for impaired driving.
A total of 319 people were charged, and 163 people had their licence suspended for exceeding provincial drug and alcohol limits, SGI said in a statement Wednesday.
Impaired driving comes with serious penalties in Saskatchewan, the Crown insurance corporation noted, with a Criminal Code charge accompanied by an automatic licence suspension and 30-day vehicle impoundment.
A conviction means a fine that starts at $1,000, Safe Driver Recognition penalties that start at $1,250, long-term licence suspensions, and mandatory driver education.
Those caught exceeding provincial limits for alcohol or drugs lose their vehicle for at least three days, and are also required to take driver education classes, SGI said.
“The penalties for deciding to drive impaired are serious because choosing to drive impaired puts everyone on the road at risk,” SGI wrote in a statement. “Driving impaired can not only wreck your summer … it can ruin your life. Always find a safe ride.”
According to SGI, the month of June also saw police issue 482 tickets for seatbelt and car seat violations, 831 tickets for distracted driving (719 of which were for cellphone use while behind the wheel), and 5,336 tickets for speeding or aggressive driving.
