The Meewasin Valley’s revitalization project has been dedicated to long-time 650 CKOM morning host Brent Loucks following a significant donation from Rawlco Radio.
The $100,000 gift will establish the Brent Loucks Valley Revitalization Program, an initiative dedicated to beautifying and restoring the Meewasin Valley on the South Saskatchewan River. Loucks said he’s pleased to see his name attached to the project.
“I looked at this awe-inspiring valley from the CKOM studio for many years,” Loucks said in a media release. “It was the daily backdrop to my career and many enjoyable moments in my life. I am proud to support Meewasin and the work they do to keep our city beautiful.”
The donation will support Meewasin’s revitalization efforts, which have included both new and traditional techniques, such as restoring old land to natural prairie using native grass seed, stabilizing the riverbank against erosion, using native aquatic plants to restore shorelines, and adding wildflowers and shrub beds to provide habitats for wildlife and pollinating species.
An interpretive panel with information about the revitalization program was placed in Gabriel Dumont Park along the Meewasin Trail, in the area of the riverbank Loucks looked out on while hosting the morning show on 650 CKOM.
Meewasin Valley Authority CEO Andrea Lafond said the gift from Rawlco will help with many of Meewasin’s current and future restoration projects, including replanting native species, controlling invasive species along the riverbank, and more.
“Meewasin does significant revitalization work throughout the Meewasin Valley each year and we are so proud to have a program that supports this work named after Brent Loucks, who has done so much for our community over his life and career,” Lafond said in a statement.
All donations to the Brent Loucks Valley Revitalization Program will be put towards restoration efforts and will be recognized during an annual dedication ceremony. Donations can be made at www.meewasin.com/donate.
