Canada is experiencing a shortage of specialized formula for infants with allergies and certain medical conditions, the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) said Tuesday.
The health authority said the shortage is expected to be temporary, and there is plenty of regular infant formula available.
The SHA asked families to only purchase specialty formula if they have a medical reason to do so, to help ensure children who need the specialized food have access to it.
“This temporary shortage of specialty formula was caused by the closure of Abbot Nutrition’s U.S.-based formula manufacturing plant and is affecting all of Canada,” the SHA said in a statement.
“The supply of specialty infant formulas will slowly grow in the coming months as production resumes.”
The SHA said parents and guardians should speak to a health-care professional to discuss concerns if their child has allergies or requires special formula.
