The University of Saskatchewan Huskies slammed the door on the Brock University Badgers with a 4-0 shutout victory Friday at the U Sports women’s hockey championship.
The tournament is being played in Charlottetown, P.E.I. The Huskies are now just two wins away from their first U Sports title in program history.
Coming into the eight-team tournament as the No. 5 seed, the Huskies relied on goaltender Camryn Drever on Friday. She stopped all 27 shots she faced from the fourth-seeded Badgers.
After a scoreless first frame, Huskies first-year forward Sara Kendall opened the scoring in the second period.
The Huskies gave themselves some much-needed insurance as Brooklyn Stevely scored early in the third period. Just minutes later, Kara Kondrat found the back of the net to extend the lead.
After holding off the desperate Badgers, the Huskies sealed the deal when Nicole Fry scored into an empty net.
Next up for the Huskies is a semifinal clash against the winner of the quarterfinal Friday between the top-seeded Concordia Stingers and the No. 8 UPEI Panthers. Puck drop is 4 p.m. local time on Saturday.
A win will send the Huskies to the gold-medal game Sunday, while a loss will see Saskatchewan play for bronze.
