The Moose Jaw U15A Warriors’ season may be over, but the team still has its sights set on a trophy of a different kind.
The minor hockey team is one of 12 teams across Canada vying for the Chevy Good Deeds Cup.
The team was selected as a regional finalist after arranging a skate for newcomers to Canada.
The team rented ice, supplied equipment and provided instruction for a dozen newcomers, most of whom had never skated before.
“I don’t think any of them had put on skates before so it was was pretty heartwarming to see,” team manager Kelsey Bakke said on the Greg Morgan Morning Show on Tuesday.
The Good Deeds Cup is a competition that encourages minor hockey teams to give back to their communities.
The challenge teams were given this year was to make hockey more inclusive and accessible.
Bakke says that’s exactly what the Warriors hope to achieve if they get enough votes to win the $100,000 grand prize.
“We would be giving it to the multicultural council so they can provide these opportunities to their clients in the future,” she said.
“(They would) use the funds for ice time, equipment and lessons. All that good stuff.”
People can go online and vote once per day and up to 10 times per day on Saturday. Voting is open until April 2.
