Regina police have stunted the growth of an operation that allegedly sold illegal cigarettes.
More than a million illegal cigarettes with a value of just over $577,000 were seized after an investigation that began in early February.
According to police, the Regina Police Service’s Online/Stolen Property Unit were joined in the investigation by other RPS investigative units, patrol officers and provincial tobacco enforcement members.
Officers executed search warrants at an apartment, two storage lockers, a motorhome and three vehicles. More than 133 cases containing around 1.1 million cigarettes were seized.
On Thursday, a 61-year-old Regina man and a 44-year-old man from the Queen City were charged with selling tobacco products or raw leaf tobacco under the Criminal Code of Canada, and possessing, transporting or selling unstamped tobacco under the Tobacco Act.
Police said the latter charge carries a fine that’s calculated on the total amount of illegal tobacco; in this case, that fine is estimated at just over $648,000.
The men were released on conditions and are to make their first appearances in Regina Provincial Court on May 3.
