Nutrien is boosting potash production.
The Saskatoon-based company announced Thursday it’ll raise production for this year by nearly 1 million tonnes, to around 15 million tonnes.
Most of the increased production is expected to happen in the second half of the year. Nutrien said its output this year will account for more than 70 per cent of global production added over the year.
As well, the company said it will hire new workers at its mines.
It’s all because of what Nutrien called “the uncertainty of potash supply from Eastern Europe” caused by the war in Ukraine.
“Our thoughts and sympathies are with those impacted by the crisis in Ukraine and we hope for an immediate de-escalation of this conflict,” Ken Seitz, Nutrien’s interim president and CEO, said in a media release.
“The impacts of this conflict extend beyond Eastern Europe as a disruption in supply of key agriculture, fertilizer and energy commodities could have implications for global food security.”
