The stage is set for the University of Saskatchewan women’s hockey team in the Canada West final.
The Huskies are in Vancouver to take on the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in a best-of-three series to decide a conference champion. Games are set for Friday, Saturday and (if necessary) Sunday.
Saskatchewan has pulled off a couple of upsets to get to the conference final.
It started on the road against the University of Manitoba Bisons, whom the Huskies swept in two games.
Then came an even bigger shocker.
The Huskies defeated the top-seeded Mount Royal Cougars in a series sweep in Calgary to not only advance to the conference final but also to punch their ticket to the U Sports championship tournament, March 24-27 in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
Huskies goaltender Camryn Drewer has played well throughout this postseason.
In Game 1 against Mount Royal, Drewer stopped all 32 shots she faced as the Huskies mustered up a 1-0 win. In Game 2, the Edmonton native made 52 saves on 53 shots as the Huskies sealed the deal in a 2-1 overtime victory.
Now, the focus shifts to the T-Birds and trying to bring home a Canada West championship banner to hang at Merlis Belsher Place.
UBC is known for its scoring depth. Ten different T-Birds have hit double-digits in scoring this season, which trumps the Huskies’ two scorers to hit that mark.
Fifth-year captain Bailee Bourassa leads the Huskies with 11 points in 20 games.
The Huskies split their season series with UBC in Saskatoon. The U of S won the first game 4-2 before T-Birds won 2-0.
UBC earned the right to host the series after finishing in second in the conference standings in the regular season.
