Ivanie Blondin was thisclose to winning another gold medal for Canada at the Beijing Winter Olympics on Saturday.
The 31-year-old long-track speed skater from Ottawa had the lead on the 16th and final lap of the women’s mass start, but Irene Schouten of the Netherlands beat the Canadian in a sprint to the finish line.
Schouten edged Blondin by 0.06 seconds.
It was Blondin’s second medal of the Beijing Games; she also won a gold in the women’s team pursuit with teammates Isabelle Weidemann and Valerie Maltais.
Maltais, who hails from Saguenay, Que., was sixth in the mass start.
The medal was Canada’s 25th of the Games, good for third on the medal table behind Norway (35) and the Russian Olympic Committee (31).
In the men’s mass start, Jordan Belchos (Toronto) was 13th and Antoine Gelinas-Beaulieu (Sherbrooke, Que.) finished 15th.
Bobsleigh: Christine de Bruin (Stony Plain, Alta.) and Kristen Bujnowski (Mount Brydges, Ont.) finished fifth in the two-woman event.
Cynthia Appiah (Toronto) and Dawn Richardson Wilson (Edmonton) placed eighth and Melissa Lotholz (Barrhead, Alta.) and Sara Villani (Norval, Ont.) were 12th.
In the four-man event, Justin Kripps (Summerland, B.C.) and teammates Ryan Sommer (White Rock, B.C.), Cam Stones (Whitby, Ont.) and Ben Coakwell (Saskatoon) were third after the first two runs.
Chris Spring (Vancouver), Cody Sorensen (Ottawa), Sam Giguere (Sherbrooke, Que.) and Mike Evelyn (Ottawa) were 11th after two runs, with Taylor Austin (Calgary), Daniel Sunderland (Calgary), Chris Patrician (Toronto) and Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive back Jay Dearborn (Yaker, Ont.) in 21st.
The final two runs are set for Saturday night.
Cross-country skiing: Olivier Leveille (Sherbrooke, Que.) was 27th and Remi Drolet (Rossland, B.C.) was 35th in the men’s 50-kilometre mass start.
Figure skating: Kirsten Moore-Towers (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Michael Marinaro (Sarnia, Ont.) were 10th in the pairs free skate and finished 10th overall.
Vanessa James (Montreal) and Eric Radford (Balmertown, Ont.) were 12th in the free skate and 12th overall.
Freestyle skiing: Noah Bowman (Calgary) finished fourth in the men’s halfpipe.
Bowman had the best score of all the competitors over the final two runs, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the top three scores from the first run.
Brendan Mackay (Calgary) was ninth in the 12-man final, one spot ahead of Simon d’Artois (Whistler, B.C.).
