Saskatoon police are asking the public to be aware of a rise in reports of catalytic converter thefts.
Over the last year, the Saskatoon Police Service says it has seen a “substantial increase in the theft of catalytic converters.”
In 2021, there were more than 300 reported thefts, compared to just 14 in 2020.
Catalytic converters, which help control exhaust emissions, are stolen for the precious metals found inside.
Typically, people are seen underneath a vehicle for a short period of time while they remove the catalytic converter, using a reciprocal saw.
Police encourage people to report any suspicious activity immediately.
“The Saskatoon Police Service wants residents to be aware that the theft of catalytic converters is a growing problem, not only in our community but across the country,” a news release from police said.
Here are some more tips for preventing and reporting property crime:
- Report suspicious or criminal activity whenever you see it.
- Be a good witness – record as much information about the suspicious or criminal activity as possible.
- Take steps to secure your home, vehicles, and personal property with proper lighting, locks, and alarms.
- Be a good neighbour and report people and activity that you know to not be normal in your community.
