The Saskatchewan Roughriders are looking out for No. 1.
Receiver Shaq Evans, who wears the No. 1 jersey for the CFL team, has signed a contract extension. He could have become a free agent in February.
The 30-year-old product of Inglewood, Calif., initially signed with the Roughriders in 2018. He was named a CFL all-star in 2019 after recording a 1,334-yard season, but his 2021 campaign was interrupted by a broken leg suffered early in the season.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder appeared in seven regular-season games for Saskatchewan in 2021, catching 25 passes for 224 yards.
Evans joins Kyran Moore, Justin McInnis and Paul McRoberts as receivers who have signed extensions with the Roughriders this off-season. Duke Williams, Jordan Williams-Lambert, Mitch Picton and Jake Harty have yet to re-sign, and Brayden Lenius was released so he could try his luck in the NFL.
Saskatchewan has extended the contracts of 15 players who could have hit the free-agent market and has released two players. There are still 33 Roughriders whose contracts could expire next month.
