Curling Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee and Own the Podium did a disservice to competition with the selection of the mixed doubles curling team.
Instead of going with the simplest way to pick the team, which would have been on Curling Canada’s own point structure, they all met and picked the team they feel gives Canada the best chance to win a medal in Beijing.
Yes, I think it’s fair to say a bit of name recognition came into play in selecting John Morris and Rachel Homan over the other teams ahead of them in points, Saskatchewan’s Nancy Martin and partner Tyrel Griffiths being one of them.
Morris and Homan are great curlers. They’ll represent Canada well, of course. Morris is the defending Olympic champion.
Now, I will concede, it’s an unprecedented situation to have to select the two who would get to play in the Olympic Games. However, what’s the point in investing in travel to competitions and to compete when the results didn’t matter?
