The University of Regina Cougars will be playing home games in empty gyms and arenas for at least the next two weekends.
The U of R athletics department announced in a media release it won’t be allowing spectators in for home events until after the Jan. 21-22 weekend at the earliest, a move it said “aligns with the university’s shift to fully remote teaching and learning to begin the winter semester in response to concerns over the rapid spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant.”
The U of R women’s volleyball team has home series at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport with the Winnipeg Wesmen this weekend and the Saskatchewan Huskies on Jan. 21-22.
The Cougars women’s hockey team is playing host to the Huskies on Saturday and the Mount Royal Cougars on Jan. 21-22 at the Co-operators Centre. Regina is to visit Saskatchewan in Saskatoon on Friday.
Regina’s men’s hockey team has a contest set for Friday at the Co-operators Centre against the U of S. The Cougars are to visit the Huskies on Saturday and Mount Royal the following weekend.
The Cougars men’s and women’s basketball teams are in Brandon this weekend and have byes on the Jan. 21-22 weekend.
Regina’s track team is scheduled to be at a meet in Saskatoon on Friday. This weekend’s Prairie Optimist Cup — at which the U of R swimming team was to compete — previously was cancelled.
The U of R said those who bought single-game tickets for the affected contests will be fully refunded, while season-ticket holders will be offered a prorated refund for the games they can’t attend.
“We will work closely with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and the university’s Health, Safety & Wellness department to continually reassess the situation in the coming weeks,” the media release added.
