Saskatoon is looking for someone new to organize its Canada Day celebrations.
The Optimist Club of Saskatoon announced Friday it had made the “difficult” decision to retire from organizing the event in Diefenbaker Park, including the fireworks.
The club has organized every event since 1967, except for the past two years, when the celebrations were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It has been an honour to serve for the past 54 years,” said Rob Belyk, the Optimist Club’s Canada Day chair.
“Over the 54-years of organizing Optimist Canada Day, the Saskatoon Optimist Club was pleased to help their fellow citizens enjoy and celebrate our country, recognize women and men in uniform that have (served) and currently serve, and to partner with First Nations in recent years. They are truly proud of their legacy.”
In recent years, the group undertook the development of a skiing, snowboarding, tubing and tobagganing facility in Diefenbaker Park.
