The University of Saskatchewan Huskies are going back to the Vanier Cup.
Saskatchewan defeated the University of Montreal Carabins 14-10 in the Mitchell Bowl Saturday to earn the team’s first Vanier Cup appearance since 2006.
After an uneventful opening half, the Carabins led the Huskies 4-1 halfway through the third quarter. A field goal would bump the lead to 9-1 with 4:29 remaining in the third quarter.
A Huskies touchdown from Adam Machart got the lead down to 9-7 in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter.
Saskatchewan looked like it was on its way to losing the tightly contested game until Machart took matters into his own hands — and legs — with just five seconds remaining. Machart ran the ball 13 yards for his second touchdown of the game and the thrilling comeback win.
Machart ran for 158 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries, and added another 24 yards and one touchdown on six catches.
Montreal quarterback Jonathan Senecal finished the game with 398 yards and 31 completions on 41 attempts as the Carabins top performer.
Earlier in the day, the Western University Mustangs trounced the St. Francis Xavier X-Men 61-6 to win the Mitchell Bowl and advance to the Vanier Cup.
Western opened a 23-0 lead after the first quarter. By halftime, the score was 51-3 as the Mustangs were able to rack up 611 yards of offence in the game.
The Mustangs finished the game with 469 yards rushing. Edouard Wanandi led the way with 238 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries. Keon Edwards rushed 109 yards and one touchdown on nine carries and Trey Humes averaged 13 yards per carry by accumulating 91 yards and three touchdowns on seven carries.
The 56th edition of the Vanier Cup is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
