The International Ice Hockey Federation is hoping to steal a play out of basketball’s playbook and get another medal event in the Olympics.
The play — 3-on-3 international hockey.
There are of course 3-on-3 leagues right now in hockey. Your kid might have played in one. The IIHF test drove a 3-on-3 tournament for youth in 2020 and will again at the youth Olympics in 2024 with the goal being an Olympic medal event at the 2026 Olympics at the earliest, though more than likely at the 2030 Games.
Basketball has done this. There were medals handed out at the Tokyo Games for 3-on-3 basketball.
The movement was to bring in — you guessed it — a quicker, faster game to attract more youth to the sport.
The IIHF hopes to do the same for hockey around the globe. That way, you may not need to find a roster of 25, rather a roster half the size.
And guess what? It should work. 3-on-3 overtime is fantastic in the NHL and maybe now we can dream of a McDavid-MacKinnon-Marner trio to win a different hockey gold medal every four years.
