The C95 Radio Marathon for Breast Cancer Research raised $340,432 Thursday, pushing the total raised by the marathon since 2000 to more than $5.3 million.
This year’s total included $330 from nine-year-old Ellie Doherty, who made and sold rainbow loom bracelets to family and friends.
“I chose to get involved for my grandma who finished cancer treatments last week,” Doherty said.
Some of the other major donations were received from Gordon Rawlinson, Midwest Laser Centre, Cameco, Saskatoon Medical Imaging, Saskatoon Watersports, Orano, Western Carpet One and Smitty’s Family Restaurants and Bugsy’s Bar & Grill.
Proceeds from the event will be used by the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan to support breast cancer research and help Saskatchewan researchers find new treatments for those affected by breast cancer every year.
Breast cancer survivors like Trenna Derdall shared their stories during the 12-hour broadcast. Derdall was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer at the age of 46.
“(I felt) fear … so much fear (when I was diagnosed) …,” Derdall said. “I was going to do everything possible to live.
“I am forever grateful for the Saskatoon Cancer Centre. I am alive today because of the research and my medical team for saving my life.”
