The RCMP is searching for a black SUV that investigators believe is being driven by someone pretending to be a police officer.
In a media release, the Mounties said they got a call Monday at about 12:45 p.m., about a black SUV with a black grille and blue lights on the dash that tried to pull over a vehicle on Highway 303 near Marshall.
Marshall is about 20 kilometres southeast of Lloydminster.
The caller said a man, believed to be between the ages of 30 and 40 and wearing a white button-up shirt, got out of the SUV and walked up to the other vehicle. He asked the lone occupant of the vehicle to get out and produce identification, but the driver drove off. The SUV then turned off onto a grid road.
The RCMP said officers from several detachments were searching for the black SUV. Members of the public are asked to report any suspicious vehicles or activity in the area around Highway 303.
“We recognize the importance to officer self-identification and the public can request identification from RCMP police officers,” the Mounties said in the release.
“If you have concerns during a police vehicle stop, you may request to see an officer’s badge and ID card. Both the badge and ID card will show the same regimental number and the ID card will have a photo. If you have further concerns, when it is safe to do so, call 310-RCMP or 911 to verify the identity of the officer or individual involved.”
