The Saskatoon Police Service has issued tickets to 11 people who attended a “freedom rally” in the city on Saturday.
In a media release Wednesday, police said the tickets for violating public health orders were given to “key participants in the rally.”
“This level of enforcement may be expanded in the future as the risk associated to COVID-19 transmission increases,” the police said in their release, suggesting more charges could be laid as the investigation continues.
The rally was billed as a “children’s freedom rally fun day,” and attracted more than 120 people to Kiwanis Park.
The event followed a similar get-together April 17 in Prince Albert, which was flagged by the Saskatchewan Health Authority as the possible source of increased COVID exposure. Anyone who attended that rally was advised to self-isolate and call HealthLine 811.
According to the Saskatoon police, more work is being done in regards to the event on Saturday to determine further action.
“Police are also consulting with our enforcement partners in Health and Justice regarding options for those that repeatedly violate the public health orders,” the release said.
“Anyone who is ordered to self-isolate and fails to do so may be subject to a Public Health detention order, and to the best of our knowledge, no one that attended the event in Saskatoon was ordered to self-isolate.”
