Saskatoon Police used a Taser to apprehend an armed man Saturday after he reportedly pointed a gun at a woman as she walked her dog.
Police were called to the 400 block of Pendygrasse Road in the Fairhaven neighborhood at 7:38 a.m. after reports of a man in a black Dodge Journey pointing a gun at a woman.
Officers arrived shortly afterwards but were unable to find the SUV.
Using the vehicle’s license plate, officers went to what they called “an address of interest.” Shortly before 8 a.m., police found two men in the SUV in a back alley in the 2900 block of Preston Avenue South.
The car sped off and officers didn’t chase.
A passenger got out of the vehicle a few blocks later. Police took him into custody but released him a short time later since he had no connection to the incident on Pendygrasse Road.
Just after noon, police returned to the alley on Preston Avenue where the SUV was parked once again.
A man came outside after officers knocked on the door of the home looking for the owner of the Journey.
“He lifted his shirt and showed that he was wearing a bullet-proof vest and also had numerous knives tucked into his waistband,” a media release from Saskatoon police said.
One officer fired his Taser to subdue the man. Before officers could arrest him, a woman from inside the home ran out and pulled the probes out of the man, freeing him momentarily.
Another officer was able to fire his Taser. This time, the woman was arrested before she could pull out the probes.
The 31-year-old man was charged with evading police, dangerous driving, pointing a firearm, possession of a prohibited weapon and a warrant for his arrest for sexual assault.
A 42-year-old woman was charged with obstruction.
The pair will be brought before a Justice of the Peace Sunday.
According to policy, the incident will be reviewed.
