A retiring health director of Muskoday First Nation has fulfilled her campaign promise to shatter the band’s glass ceiling.
Ava Bear received 143 votes after Friday’s election, 15 more than runner-up Randy Bear. In a post to Facebook, Bear expressed her gratitude for the support, and also congratulated the other candidates.
“I would like to say a huge thank you also to the candidates who put their names forward. It takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there,” she said.
During her campaigning, Bear revealed to paNOW she was inspired to run by Kamala Harris, who was elected the first American Vice-President.
In addition to exploring job training opportunities and creating a safer community, Bear also planned to look at more food security initiatives. She also discussed making changes to the band’s election act.
“I know I have a challenge ahead of me but I am relying on advice and assistance from you, the members,” Bear said.
Bear has 10 years of experience as a band councillor, and was also a tribal Vice Chief of the Saskatoon Tribal Council for two years.
Five councillors were also elected Friday: Beryl Bear, Clayton Bear, Delbert Bear, Tracy Bear, and Merle Crain.
