Saskatoon police are investigating after a woman was found dead in the Lakeview area early Wednesday.
In a news release, police said officers were called to a home in the 200 block of Wakaw Place just after 2 a.m. to investigate a disturbance.
Police found a 60-year-old woman dead inside and a 65-year-old man who was seriously wounded. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Dale Thurber lives across the street and was woken up by his daughter at 3 a.m. telling him there were four police cars parked on the street.
“It’s been a very quiet, very peaceful neighbourhood. Kids are always playing around the neighbourhood. There has never been any concern of crime — even minor stuff. To have this happen is kind of shocking,” Thurber said.
Police arrested a 34-year-old man in the home after using a taser on him.
Thurber recently moved into his home but knew the previous owners and has been visiting the area for the past 10 years.
He said he didn’t know the couple at Wakaw Place too well, but met them a couple of times to stop for a neighbourly chat.
“It just seems weird that an old couple that live on their own would have something like this happen,” Thurber said.
As detectives from major crimes and the forensic unit laid down evidence markers on the road Wednesday afternoon, Barb Millard had a tough time comprehending a homicide happening down the street.
“It’s absolutely shocking — unbelievable this has happened,” said Millard, a 27-year resident on the street.
Police said the incident is not random.
This is the city’s first murder investigation in 2021. Last year, the city recorded 12 murders.
