The Flin Flon Bombers will not be playing in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League for the rest of 2020.
The team shared the news just a few weeks after the Manitoba government deemed the province a red zone because COVID-19 numbers are constantly growing there.
Since that time, the Bombers have been trying to work with health authorities in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as the Saskatchewan government, to try to find a way to stay on the ice. However, talks did not seem to result in a solution.
“These discussions included finding alternatives for the Bombers to practise and play. A solution to date has been unable to be found due to the daily increases of COVID-19,” the SJHL said in a statement on Twitter. “The Bombers have exhausted all avenues in the process while keeping the health of their players and communities in mind.”
As a result, the team will hold off on playing until after the league’s Christmas break, which begins on Dec. 19. The Bombers’ first game after the break would be on Jan. 1 against the La Ronge Ice Wolves.
The Bombers said on Twitter they will be releasing more information in the next few days.
Flin Flon had only played two games to begin the season, going 0-2-0-0.
