The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) is confirming that a police officer has tested positive for COVID-19.
It’s the first time during the pandemic that a sworn officer has tested positive for the virus.
SPS Chief Troy Cooper says they planned for this scenario.
“As a police service, we are considerate of the concern that members of the community may have upon hearing that a police officer has tested positive for COVID-19. However, we want to assure citizens that we have planned for this likely possibility and remain in a strong position to continue to effectively serve our community.”
According to the department, the officer works in an administrative position and does not come into contact often with front line members or the general public in the course of their duties.
It’s not believed the officer who tested positive for the virus contracted it in the workplace.
Any areas the officer worked in are now being deep cleaned and the police service is working closely with public health officials for contact tracing.
No other information about the person or any further health updates will be provided by the department.
