Despite gloomy weather, over 50 people attended the police mobilization unit’s Bike Day on Saturday.
Volunteers from bike shops such as Doug’s Spoke N’ Sport, Bike Doctor and Outtabounds were in the Pleasant Hill Park helping people out with their bikes while officers gave tips on bike safety.
“We are doing repairs on bikes today for people in the community,” Jason Woytowich, owner of Doug’s Spoke N’ Sport, said. “Some of the people we are helping today might not have the extra cash to get their bikes fixed, so we are happy to help out.”
Tire pumps and allen wrenches were some of the tools that were used on bikes of all sizes and colours.
Const. Garret Bane with the Saskatoon Police was happy to be engaging with the community.
“It’s important to have safe bikes as a means of transportation,” Bane said. “We are happy that these bike shops were willing to donate their time. We obviously couldn’t have done this without them. There are some really outstanding people in this community.”
Bane added that the support was ‘overwhelmingly positive’ and that there will probably be another event planned in the future.
“Since there has been such a great amount of support today, I hope we can do this again next year.”
The event operated from 12:00 until 3 p.m.
