Friday gave us a really tough conversation in the province.
A star player of the Saskatchewan Roughriders called out Rider fans for their views on the protests down south on racial inequality.
Shaq Evans posted a series of tweets on how disappointed he was to have fans who cheer for him and buy jerseys and ask for autographs are the same people telling a Black American that the racism he has lived and is seeing is somehow overblown.
This all came out when the Roughriders posted on Facebook a message supporting Black Lives Matter and the athletes protesting in the NBA and NHL, among others.
Let’s just say there were more than enough fans displeased with the Riders showing their cultural conscience to make Evans and other teammates start doubting their love for Rider Nation.
It has happened before.
There was racism toward Roy Shivers and Danny Barrett. Even Darian Durant felt it.
There is racism here. You can’t deny it. I once heard someone say out loud, “I just hate those people.”
But it’s a small, small portion of the great people of this province. Otherwise, we wouldn’t see Belton Johnson, Wes Cates, Don Narcisse, George Reed and many other Black Americans want to call Saskatchewan home.
