A planned protest Thursday in Saskatoon is lawful “as long as it remains peaceful,” according to Saskatoon police.
The rally, titled on Facebook as the “Justice for George Rally,” has more than 60 marked as ‘going’ for Thursday at 6 p.m. at Saskatoon city hall.
Rallies are being held across North America, with protesters crowding streets to remember George Floyd. Floyd is the black man who was killed on May 25 in Minneapolis, Minn., by a now former police officer, who knelt on Floyd’s neck, killing him.
This would be Saskatoon’s second rally for social injustice in the past week.
“Everyone please wear face masks & bring hand sanitizer if you have it,” the Facebook event description reads.
The City of Saskatoon says it hasn’t received any requests for special event permits.
On its website, and confirmed by communications consultant Julie Mintenko, the city says it won’t be approving any outdoor special events scheduled between March 27 and June 30 due to COVID-19.
“We are not medical experts and we would look to the chief public health officer and the province to speak to gatherings, and the risks involved. We simply follow that public health order and the guidelines when it comes to programs and services provided by the city,” an email from Mintenko to 650 CKOM said.
On Tuesday, a similar rally was held at the legislative building in Regina.
Saskatoon police says it’s everyone’s lawful right to assemble and will allow it to happen.
