There is something special about Day 1 of CFL training camps that we all missed dearly on Sunday.
It’s like the first test drive in a new car or the first walkthrough of a potential new house.
There are new faces. There are players looking to become the new star. And in Saskatchewan over the May long weekend, we were supposed to be watching Roughriders quarterback Cody Fajardo’s first practices with offensive co-ordinator Jason Maas.
We were to see how his chemistry is growing with receivers Shaq Evans and Kyran Moore, and if Jordan Williams-Lambert could fill the hole left behind by Naaman Roosevelt.
We missed out on that first big play of the day that would have fans clapping and jotting down on their roster sheets which player stood out.
One-on-one drills for the offensive and defensive linemen are always a must watch. The energy of Day 1 of training camp for a football fan is hard to describe.
And the feeling of it not being there this weekend is equally difficult to put into words, as “It sucks” seems like an understatement.
