Commissioner Randy Ambrosie finally had to check his usual optimistic outlook at the door when he addressed Ottawa to try to get up to $150 million for the CFL.
Instead, Ambrosie gave us an honest look just where the CFL is — $20 million in losses last season across the league. There likely won’t be a 2020 season due to COVID-19 and the league’s survival is in serious question.
Based on that, it should be an easy ask for federal help.
The problem for Ambrosie wasn’t his candid opening address; it was the lack of detail he had when the questions started coming from the Members of Parliament.
How much money will go to the players? He had no answer. Why weren’t the players by his side to make the pitch? Well, they were going to talk on Friday. Is this a loan or a bailout? It’s not a handout, it’s a partnership.
If someone walked up to my house and asked for $100 and couldn’t explain to me how and where the money will be used, the odds of me giving it to them would be slim.
Hopefully, the league and players can park their hard feelings and start looking like partners soon. The future of the league may hinge on them finally getting along.
