People in Saskatoon will have to show their Canadian pride at home this year.
The Optimist Club of Saskatoon announced Tuesday the outdoor festivities in Diefenbaker Park have been cancelled because of the COVID-19 health crisis.
“We regret making this decision, sadly it is the right decision, to keep the citizens safe from a further COVID-19 outbreak,” chair Rob Belyk said in a release.
Belyk said Saskatoon has elected to follow the recommendations from the Department of Canadian Heritage in supporting virtual events instead.
He said the committee will co-ordinate a local program featuring messages from local dignitaries and special guests, which will be followed by the National Virtual Canada Day celebration, featuring world-class entertainers.
