By the end of today, three Safeway locations in Saskatoon will be closing their doors for good.
They will undergo renovations and re-open as Freshcos in August.
One Safeway customer, Margaret Erhart, says the closing of the Market Mall location will be a huge loss to the large amount of seniors that live in the area.
“They have the Giant Tiger out on the other side but it only has a little bit of things, not enough for real shopping,” she said.
“And most of them, they don’t drive anymore. They come over here with their little cart and it’s going to be a tough one for the people.”
Erhart has heard from some ladies in the area, who say this store will be missed. She even saw some tears from one lady who now has to figure out new arrangements for groceries.
According to Erhart, she and her husband still drive so it won’t be too difficult for them to get groceries but that’s not the case for everybody.
“A lot of people that live around here are in their nineties. They’re going to have problems,” she said.
According to a sign on the store’s window, the Safeway pharmacy will remain open during renovations, “to ensure your continued care. There will be no impact or disruption to the service we provide you.”
The Confederation Mall and 33rd Street locations will also be closing at 6 p.m. tonight.
