Carbon monoxide poisonings, fires and car crashes all fall under the jurisdiction of the Saskatoon Fire Department.
In the wake of how busy Valentine’s Day was, Fire Chief Morgan Hackl sat down with 650 CKOM’s Brent Loucks to explain how they respond in busy situations.
On that day, there were five garbage fires, seven automobile accidents, a fire at the Shercom rubber recycling plant and one in the Corman Park RM.
“What really alarmed us was the types of calls we were having, and all at once,” Hackl said.
Firefighters who are off duty will often come in on days like that to help expand the department’s coverage.
“We backfill with staff so the community has that consistent model when the city gets busy.”
However, service won’t be unaffected when there’s a high number of incidents.
“When it gets really busy, the coverage will adjust. It won’t be quite the same everywhere. But we always look to be as aggressive as we can, move trucks around and call people in when we have to.”
