A number of 13- and 14-year-olds were robbed while playing hockey Wednesday night in Swift Current.
According to the RCMP, two Swift Current bantam teams were playing at the Fairview East Hockey Arena. Between 8:15 and 8:45 p.m., someone entered the teams’ dressing rooms and rifled through the players’ hockey bags and clothes.
“To date, our investigation has 10 victims that have come forward reporting a total of 10 cellphones, six sets of earbuds, a pair of eyeglasses, clothing, approximately $200 in cash and a wallet that are missing,” said Staff Sgt. Gary Hodges of the Swift Current City detachment.
Hodges said Wednesday’s theft was the first of its kind in his five-plus years in Swift Current.
He said he had spoken to city officials about the thefts and about encouraging teams to lock their dressing rooms when they’re on the ice if they don’t already do so.
The incident prompted Hodges to offer some recommendations.
“Try and theft-proof yourself in any situation,” he said. “Keep any valuables locked and secured anytime you’re in a public environment — or private for that matter.”
The investigation is continuing.
